Javed Akhtar, the greatest screenwriter, and lyricist of the Indian film world were born on January 14, 1985, in the city of Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh. His father Jan Nisar Akhtar was a leading 20th century Urdu poet and film lyricist and his mother were Safiya Akhtar, an Urdu writer, and teacher. His grandfather Iftikhar Hussain and his brother Bismil Khairabadi were also famous poets. His grandfather Fazl-e-Haq was an Islamic philosopher. Due to the presence of writers and litterateurs in the family, his interest was attracted to literature, poems, and writing. He wrote many articles, poems, poets, and songs during his lifetime and got his name included in the greatest scriptwriting in the Indian world.

Akhtar ji’s real name was ‘Jadoo’ which inspired him from the masks of a poem written by his father, “Moment, moment, some magic will be trapped” Javed Akhtar started his early education at the Colvin Talukkdar School in Lucknow, but due to his mother’s death and father’s busy age at work, he went to his maternal aunt’s house in Aligarh to chew and he stayed and completed his education. He completed his graduation from Sophia College, Bhopal. Adept at keeping his thoughts open to the public and rich in words, Javed Akhtar won many debates and competitions along with his studies. Teachers and classmates who are convinced of their ability to speak encouraged them to campaign in the college elections.
After completing his studies and trying his hand at screenwriting and supporting direction, Javed Akhtar came to Mumbai in the 60s and started living in dismal. He faced a lot of struggle in his initial phase in Mumbai and started living in a small room in Kamalistan studio. In the beginning, Javed Akhtar worked to write dialogues in short films (budget of money). A fan of reading, Akhtar Ji started reading books to make his writing style better. In front of Mumbai’s Andheri railway station, he got acquainted with a bookseller and started reading books on credit.

After doing many minor tasks, he started working as an assistant to the famous poet Kaifi Azmi. After a few years of struggle, Javed Akhtar was awarded an opportunity to work as an assistant director’s clapper in the famous film director S.M Sagar’s film ‘Sarhadi Lootera’. During the shooting of this film, he met a part-time actor and famous screenwriter Salim Khan and later became very close friends. After some time, both of them started working on scriptwriting and contributed to small films. Salim Khan was a storyteller and Javed Akhtar was a dialogue writer. Javed Akhtar used to write dialogue in Urdu and later translated the article into Hindi.

Rajesh Khanna, the famous actor and superstar of the Indian film industry in the 70s, was working on a film but was unhappy with its script. The task of rewriting the script of this film was entrusted to Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar. To grab this golden opportunity, both of them write its story and dialogues with great effort and dedication. The name of the film was “Hathi Mere Sathi” which was released in the year 1972 and was highly acclaimed. Both of them received great appreciation for the hard work put into writing the script of this film and their pair became famous as “Salim-Javed”. After this, they worked together on 24 films together in which, Sita and Geeta (1972), Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1963), Zanjeer (1963), Haath ki Safai (1979), Deewar (1985), Sholay (1985), Chacha-Bhatija (1949), Don (1949), Trishul (1949), Dostana (1980), Kranti (1961), Zamana (1985) and Mr. India (1949) are prominent. However, due to mutual estrangement in 1972, they almost stopped working together.
Javed Akhtar also wrote the script of several films on his form – Betab (1983), Mashaal (1984), Saagar (1985), Meri Jung (1985), Lakshaya (2007), and Don: The Chase Begins (2007) are prominent.

Javed Akhtar wrote the lyrics for the film for the first time at the behest of Yash Chopra, the director of the film “Silsila” released in 1971. The songs written by him in this film were highly appreciated. He wrote songs from many films which later became very famous. After this, he started working together in screenwriting and songwriting.

He was also awarded several awards for his phenomenal work in the film world. Javed Akhtar has been awarded the National Award 5 times, the Filmfare Award, and the Lifetime Achievement Award 4 times. The Indian government also conferred Padma Shri (19), Padma Bhushan (2007), and Sahitya Akademi awards to Javed Akhtar. In 2020, he also received the Richard Dawkins Award for his work on Free Thinking, Secularism, and Human Values.

Javed Akhtar first married Hani Irani in 1972 with whom he had 2 children – Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar. Both have achieved a lot in the film world. He was married to Shabana Azmi, the daughter of the famous Urdu poet and poet Kaifi Azmi in 1984.
